The Mouth-Body Connection

A whole-health approach to periodontal care — understanding how the health of your gums connects to your overall well-being.

A healthy mouth supports much more than eating, speaking, and smiling with confidence. The tissues in your mouth interact with your immune system and bloodstream, which is why researchers continue to study connections between periodontal inflammation and health elsewhere in the body.

When gum disease is active, bacteria and the body’s inflammatory response can persist beneath the gumline. For some patients, that ongoing burden may be especially relevant when other inflammatory or chronic health concerns are present.

At Farber Center for Periodontics & Dental Implants, we take a whole-health approach to periodontal care. Our team combines a detailed clinical examination with advanced diagnostics when appropriate, then considers the results alongside your medical history, personal risk factors, and goals. The result is a clearer picture of your oral health and a plan designed specifically for you.

The Oral-Systemic Link

How oral inflammation may relate to overall health

Scientific research continues to examine associations between periodontal disease and several systemic health conditions. An association does not mean that gum disease directly causes another condition — it does suggest that managing oral bacteria and inflammation is an important part of a thoughtful, preventive approach to health.

Our Process

Your oral-systemic evaluation

1

Learn What Is Happening Below the Surface

We begin with a conversation about your dental concerns, health history, family history, and wellness goals, followed by a comprehensive periodontal examination. When appropriate, OralDNA® testing can provide additional information about bacteria, genetic susceptibility, and inflammatory markers.

2

Build a More Complete Picture

Clinical findings may be paired with CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) imaging to examine the teeth, supporting bone, and nearby structures in three dimensions. Together, these tools can reveal patterns and areas of concern that standard dental X-rays or a visual examination may not show on their own.

3

Turn the Findings into a Personal Plan

Your periodontist will explain the results in clear language and recommend next steps based on your individual needs. Depending on the findings, care may include periodontal treatment, risk-factor management, collaboration with your other healthcare providers, and ongoing monitoring to help protect your oral health over time.

Advanced Diagnostics

A deeper look with advanced diagnostics

Technology does not replace a thorough periodontal examination — it adds useful information. Farber Center may incorporate salivary testing and 3D imaging when these tools can help clarify risk, guide treatment, or monitor changes over time.

OralDNA® Testing

OralDNA® testing uses a simple, non-invasive saliva sample to uncover information that may not be visible during a routine examination. The results provide insight into harmful bacteria, genetic susceptibility, and inflammatory risk factors, helping your periodontist better understand your periodontal health and personalize your care.

MyPerioPath®

MyPerioPath® identifies and measures specific disease-causing bacteria associated with periodontal infections. Knowing which pathogens are present can help your periodontist make more targeted treatment and monitoring decisions.

Alert 2™

Alert 2™ combines information about periodontal bacteria with insight into genetic susceptibility. The results can help identify patients who may be more vulnerable to periodontal breakdown and support a more individualized prevention and treatment strategy.

CBCT Imaging

CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) imaging creates detailed, three-dimensional views of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding anatomy. It can help our team evaluate bone levels, identify hidden areas of concern, and plan periodontal or implant treatment with greater precision.

Is It Right For You?

Is a whole-health periodontal evaluation right for you?

You may benefit from a more in-depth evaluation if you:

  • Have bleeding, swollen, tender, or receding gums
  • Have been diagnosed with gum disease or have a history of recurring periodontal problems
  • Have a family history of periodontal disease or early tooth loss
  • Are managing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, or another chronic inflammatory condition
  • Want to better understand your personal bacterial or genetic risk factors
  • Prefer a preventive, personalized approach to periodontal care
  • Are preparing for dental implant treatment and want a detailed assessment of gum and bone health

A personalized, preventive path to healthier gums — and a healthier you.

FAQ

Questions about oral-systemic care

What does “oral-systemic health” mean?

Oral-systemic health describes the ways conditions in the mouth may relate to health throughout the body. Much of the research focuses on oral bacteria, the immune response, and chronic inflammation associated with periodontal disease.

Can gum disease affect the rest of my body?

Gum disease does not mean you will develop another health condition. However, research has found associations between periodontal disease and several systemic conditions. Treating gum disease removes an active source of infection and inflammation from the mouth and helps protect the teeth and supporting bone.

What is OralDNA® testing used for?

OralDNA® is a category of laboratory salivary tests that can provide information about periodontal bacteria and certain genetic risk factors. Your periodontist may recommend testing when the results could help personalize care or monitor treatment response.

What is MyPerioPath®?

MyPerioPath® measures specific bacteria linked to periodontal disease. The report helps your care team understand your bacterial profile and may inform treatment and follow-up recommendations.

What is Alert 2™?

Alert 2™ provides information about periodontal pathogens and genetic susceptibility to periodontal disease. It can add context to your clinical findings and personal risk profile.

What should I expect during salivary testing?

The collection process is quick and non-invasive. You will typically swish and gargle with a sterile saline solution, then place the sample in a collection tube for laboratory analysis.

Why might my periodontist recommend a CBCT scan?

A CBCT scan provides a three-dimensional view of areas that may be difficult to assess with conventional dental X-rays. It may be recommended to evaluate bone, investigate a concern, or plan periodontal or dental implant treatment.

Does improving gum health treat a medical condition?

No. Periodontal care is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. Its purpose is to identify and manage disease in the mouth. Farber Center may coordinate with your physician or other healthcare providers when doing so would support more connected care.

Is Farber Center’s approach considered holistic?

Our approach is holistic in the sense that we consider the patient as a whole rather than viewing the gums in isolation. Care remains grounded in periodontal science, advanced diagnostics, clinical judgment, and individualized treatment planning.

Will dental insurance cover OralDNA® testing or CBCT imaging?

Benefits differ by plan and by the reason a test or scan is recommended. Our team can review anticipated costs and available insurance information with you before proceeding.
